How to Organize Your Feeds in NewsNinja

Group related sources and shape each list for easier browsing.

The Feeds screen is where you browse and manage the sources you follow in NewsNinja. You can read them together in Home, open a particular source, or build categories that combine websites, videos, podcasts, and social feeds around an interest.

This guide explains how to add sources, organize your sidebar, choose what appears in Home, and adjust the layout and sorting of your content.

Find your way around Feeds

The Feeds sidebar gives you several ways to browse your collection:

  • Home brings together content from the sources you have chosen to show there.
  • Source collections, such as RSS, Reddit, YouTube, and podcasts, let you browse a particular kind of content.
  • Individual sources let you focus on one publication, channel, podcast, subreddit, or social account.
  • Categories bring together sources you have grouped around an interest.
  • Starred gives you access to items you have saved.
  • Integrations provide access to configured weather, calendar, reminders, and crypto tickers.

The sections available in the sidebar reflect the content you have added. On larger screens, you can browse the sidebar alongside your content; on smaller screens, select a destination to open its list.

Add a new source

Use the + control in Feeds to add a feed. You can also open Manage Feeds and choose Add feed from its + menu. Both routes open Add Source.

If you have an address, paste it into the URL field and continue. NewsNinja can resolve supported website, feed, channel, and profile addresses. Alternatively, select a service to see the input expected for that source.

Supported content types include:

Source type What you can follow
RSS Websites, blogs, and publications with feeds.
Reddit Subreddits.
YouTube Channels.
Podcasts Shows added through a podcast RSS or Apple Podcasts URL.
X Accounts.
Mastodon Accounts identified by profile URL or handle and server.
Bluesky Accounts identified by profile URL or handle.
Hacker News Hacker News content through its dedicated source option.

Social feeds let you follow and read posts within NewsNinja. Available settings vary by source type.

Review the preview, adjust the available source settings, choose a category if you want one, and save. The Show in Home option controls whether the source joins your mixed Home collection. RSS sources also offer a reader choice, which determines how their articles are extracted for reading.

Weather, Calendar, Reminders, and crypto tickers are available under Integrations in Add Source. Configure them there and manage them later through Manage Feeds.

Add sources from Discover

You can also build your collection through Discover. Browse its curated sources and categories, explore popular channels and podcasts, or use Search or enter address to look for an interest or resolve a known source address.

Open a source to preview its content, then tap Add to open its setup and save it to your collection. You can choose its available settings before saving, just as when adding it from Feeds.

Once added, the source is available in Feeds. You can edit it, organize it into categories, and decide whether it appears in Home.

Create categories around your interests

Open Manage Feeds, tap +, and choose New category. Enter a name, select at least one feed from your collection, and save.

Categories can mix and match different feed types. For example:

  • Technology could combine RSS publications, YouTube channels, a subreddit, podcasts, and Bluesky accounts.
  • Local News could include local newspapers, community blogs, and Mastodon accounts.
  • Food could bring together recipe websites, cooking videos, and podcasts.

This lets you organize by topic even when the content comes from different services.

To change a category, open it in Manage Feeds. You can rename it, add sources, or remove sources from its membership. You can also assign a source to a category while adding or editing that source.

Removing a source from a category leaves it in your feed collection. Deleting a category removes the grouping while keeping its sources. Daily integrations are managed separately from content categories.

Open a category in the sidebar to browse its content together. If you want a recent snapshot on your dashboard too, add that category through Customize Today → Add Section.

Choose what belongs in Home

Home is your mixed collection of sources enabled for Home. Each content source has a Show in Home setting that you can change when adding or editing it.

Turn it on for sources you want in your main catch-up list. Turn it off for sources you prefer to visit individually or through a category. Leaving a source out of Home does not unsubscribe you from it.

You can also open Manage home feeds from the main Home list’s controls to adjust the selection in one place.

For example, you might include your daily news publications in Home while keeping a large collection of hobby feeds in categories. Your sidebar still provides access to both.

Home in Feeds and Today Home use related source selection, but offer different presentations. Feeds Home is a browsing list; Today Home shows recent content within the dashboard’s selected 8-, 12-, or 24-hour window.

Filter the content you see

When Home contains multiple supported feed types, its feed-type filter lets you focus on one kind of content, such as RSS, YouTube, or podcasts. Choose All to return to the mixed list.

This filter changes what you are viewing. Show in Home changes which sources belong in the Home collection. Use the filter for a temporary focus and Show in Home for your ongoing source selection.

In Settings → News & Articles, enable Hide read items if you want lists to focus on unread content. Marking an item unread makes it eligible to appear again.

You can also use Words black list in that Settings section to hide articles whose titles contain words you have excluded. If your list seems unexpectedly short, review the active filters and these settings.

Sort and group your content

Open a list’s controls to choose the available sorting or grouping mode. The choices depend on what you are browsing.

For Home and mixed or non-Reddit categories, the main options are:

  • Scientifically groups items with similar titles, helping bring related coverage together.
  • Newest first puts more recent items first.
  • Oldest first puts older items first.
  • By feed organizes items by their source or publication.

Scientific grouping compares meaningful words in article titles. On aggregate Home screens, groups with multiple items start collapsed and can be expanded to see additional coverage. You can adjust the comparison algorithm and threshold in Settings → News & Articles.

Individual RSS and podcast feeds offer newest-first and oldest-first sorting. Reddit Home, individual subreddits, and Reddit-only categories use Reddit’s sorting options, such as Hot, New, and Top.

For a fuller explanation of the grouping algorithms and threshold, see How to Customize NewsNinja.

Choose a list layout

Use the list’s layout selector to switch between Compact, Card, and Magazine:

  • Compact keeps items dense for quick scanning.
  • Card gives items a distinct card presentation with more visual space.
  • Magazine offers a more editorial presentation with greater emphasis on imagery.

Your layout choice is remembered. It changes the presentation without changing your subscriptions, categories, or Home selection.

These list styles are separate from Today’s Detailed and Prominent dashboard styles. You can keep Feeds compact while using a more visual Today dashboard.

Rearrange and personalize the sidebar

To change the order of sidebar sections, open Manage Feeds, then choose Order Sections from its menu. Drag sections into the order you prefer, or use the up and down controls on Mac.

Move the sections you use most toward the top—for example, Categories, RSS, or Podcasts. Individual sources and categories are listed alphabetically within their sections, so renaming one changes its position in that alphabetical order.

You can customize sidebar section colors through Settings → Theme → Feed Colors, a NewsNinja+ feature. Use different colors to make source collections easier to recognize. Section ordering is managed through Manage Feeds; color choices are managed through Settings.

See How to Customize NewsNinja for more on colors, reader preferences, app icons, and choosing your start page.

Edit or remove a source

Open Manage Feeds and select a source to edit it. Depending on its type, you can adjust settings such as its name, category, reader, and Show in Home selection. Save your changes when finished.

To stop following a source, use its Delete action in Manage Feeds and confirm the removal. This removes the source from NewsNinja, rather than simply hiding it from Home or removing its Today section.

Choose the action that matches what you want:

Your goal What to change
Keep a source but leave it out of Home Turn off Show in Home.
Keep a source but remove it from a category Edit that category’s membership.
Keep a source but remove its dashboard section Remove the section in Customize Today.
Stop following the source Delete it from Manage Feeds.

Manage Feeds also provides Import Feeds and Export Feeds for moving subscriptions using OPML files. If you are coming from another RSS reader, importing your existing subscriptions can save time.

Build a collection that is easy to browse

Start by adding your favorite sources, then create a few categories around your interests. Keep Home focused on what you want to catch up with regularly, use filters when you want a particular kind of content, and place your most-used sidebar sections near the top.

As your collection grows, you can change its organization without starting over. Discover helps you find new sources, Manage Feeds keeps them organized, and your preferred sorting and layout make them easier to read.
